I realised that although all of these design elements are important (and done incorrectly they can actually destroy the ability to rest in a space), and they certainly do create a strong sense of place, I think it is more about a sense of purpose, perhaps even a state of mind. If I introduced my two young children and a football into this space, it would be anything but Quiet. This space is not meant for that purpose and so it does not happen.
Gardens and wild spaces invite us to connect and consider something bigger; something we can shape but not completely control, something we can change but not start. We cannot invent the seed from nothing, only mould and tend it.
I would like to say a BIG thank you to Ian, Samantha and Sheila at Holland House who have all made my stay so welcoming. The house is immaculate, the breakfast good and hearty and the space peaceful.
