Avid visitors to RHS Chelsea might spot some similarities with the planting tones of our Marshall's garden and that of Matthew Wilson's Yorkshire garden celebrating the beauty of York Minster (see his garden on Main Avenue), and that's because the plants have been grown by Howard's Nurseries, provided by Matthew and chosen by myself.
It is a small area, but plants carefully selected and located in the right place show off quality landscaping beautifully.
Our only tree is a Pomegranate tree, chosen to tone in beautifully with the Copper slate Stoneface which graces the wall behind. It is clothed in two Clematis from Thornycroft Nurseries (visit them inside the Floral Marquee) and under-planted with the delicate dancing white flowers of Orlaya grandiflora, the sturdy wide leaves of hosta, and interspersed with geranium.
On the other side of the garden, the beautiful tones of StoneFace Harvest Mix provide a more subtle backdrop for a slightly different mix of plants. Here, the lovely blue tones of Hosta Sieboldiana mix effortlessly with the paler colours behind adding pastel shades into this part of the display.
Come and visit us on Stand FR326 in the Fresh area for an 'up front and personal' experience with Marshalls stone.
The Marshalls Team started on site today under clear skies. Their Trade Stand in the Fresh area is showcasing a wide range of products both within a garden setting and in the form of a 'see-for-yourself' library at the back of the stand.
Being able to get 'up close and personal' with the stone is a unique opportunity for visitors coming to Chelsea this year. Although many Marshalls products are being used in the main show gardens, visitors are of course forbidden to interact with these spaces, hence the benefit of a trade space with an open invitation to see how the products look and feel first hand.
The garden is a small space, but it is filled with a wide range of different stone, illustrating the ability of the colour palette to guide choices which work well together.
Only four days are allowed for Trade Stand build-up, so there is a delicate balance between complexity, space to safely build, and time!
After only two days, the M-Team have created a stunningly landscaped space complete with two water features, two planting beds and seven different products.
The hard landscaping showcases:
1. Natural sandstone - Versuro sawn 'Autumn Bronze Multi' (inside covered area, back of stand; within the garden area)
2. Natural sandstone - Versuro sawn King Size Golden Sand Multi (planters)
3. Natural sandstone - Versuro sawn Linear planks 'Antique Silver Multi' (at the front of the garden)
4. Vitrified paving - Symphony Birch
5. Vitrified paving - Symphony Buff (inside covered area)
6. Stone Face Drystack Copper Slate (left-hand wall)
7. Stone Face Drystack Harvest Mix (right-hand wall)
The sandstone is of course Fairstone - Marshall's trademark stone which guarantees that no child labour has been used in it's production. Unicef benefit from every meter squared of Fairstone sold - an extremely high value, quality product with excellent ethics throughout the entire lifecycle of the stone.
Now, all that is needed are a few plants to bring the space alive...
I am delighted to be working with Marshalls on the design of their garden this year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show!
The garden design is inspired by the promotion of health and well-being through our outdoor spaces and includes water features, which create a peaceful and relaxing ambiance, and Pomegranate trees promoting the benefits of growing fresh food at home even in the smallest of spaces. A wonderful combination of natural stone products sits alongside some truly delightful planting, inviting visitors to enter the garden and experience the quality of the products first hand.
It is the first time I have worked at RHS Chelsea and I am thrilled to have been invited to work alongside such an admirable and ethical UK company. We only have 4 days to complete our garden, and whilst it is small, it is quite intricate in places so we are hoping the weather stays on our side!
For over a century, Marshalls has been helping homeowners to achieve their dream outside space. The company offers the UK’s finest quality and most extensive range of patio and driveway products; including a wide range of stunning natural stone paving, walling and block paving options to suit any style of home.
Marshalls proudly leads the landscaping industry in the ethical sourcing of natural stone products from India. For nearly a decade the company has been working on the ground to improve the lives of Indian quarry workers and to raise awareness of the issue of child labour in this sector.
At this year’s RHS Chelsea, Marshalls is proud to be showcasing a range of its products at its stand located by the Fresh area, as well as offering advice and inspiration for how these products can be used to transform a space from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
Marshalls’ experts will also be offering advice on how to avoid cowboy builders. The Marshalls Register of Accredited Landscapers & Driveway Installers is a national network of independent professional installers. They are not employed by Marshalls, but are strictly vetted and monitored by the company to assess their levels of competence and performance.
Marshalls’ Group Marketing Director, Chris Harrop, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be at this year’s RHS Chelsea. Our stand is all about offering visitors the inspiration and information they need to transform their front and back gardens.
“We’re showcasing products which are really on trend for 2016 as well as a range of classics and also some new material types, so there really is something for everyone.
“We understand that choosing a tradesman can be a stressful experience, so as well as inspiration we want to offer homeowners reassurance by being able to recommend installers from the Marshalls Register. We recently undertook research which told us that 99.7% of our end customers who have used a Register member would recommend them to other homeowners, so by choosing a Marshalls Register member you know you’re choosing the best in the business.”
I will be at the Marshalls stand on Tuesday 24 May to answer any questions about the design.
